Dahlia

Ah, the dahlia.

This, for me, was the gateway flower. There’s a magic, a mystery, an aura around this flower… and it weaves its way into and throughout your life.

Growing Info

Dahlias are annuals that are grown from tubers rather than seeds. They are cold sensitive, so planting must wait until several weeks after the last spring frost. Choose a sunny site with well-draining soil, then plant the tubers horizontally 4-6 inches in the ground. The trickiest part of planting can be finding the “eye” of the tuber. Other than that, they are relatively easy to grow and make for wildly stunning cut flowers!
Because they are cold sensitive, tubers are typically dug up at the end of the growing season, just before the first frost in autumn. When pulled up from the ground, you’ll notice you have more tubers than when you started! Wash and divide the tubers, dry them for a day or two before storing them in peatmoss or sawdust to protect them from rotting over the winter months.

The Magic of Dahlia

It’s about dignity, dahling. Holding yourself and your actions with a certain level of grace, kindness and self-respect. Responding with intention, not reacting with emotion. Noble elegance. Stately. Beauty.

This esteemed flower does well in spells regarding self-esteem. It helps the querent see through the veils and masks of others. Dreams, mystique, occult wisdom, the shadows, transmutation of emotions.
